Abstract

This paper presents the results of research into the process of testing controlled impedance circuit boards. It aims to provide a general introduction to the subject of controlled impedance circuit board production for manufacturers wishing to make this type of board in the future and offers constructive suggestions for those who may want to improve on their current process. Consequently, in addition to describing test issues there are references to some of the other main subject areas that require attention when the production of high quality controlled impedance circuit boards is to be considered, namely design, materials and fabrication. The content of this paper is based on production trials that were conducted by MEPD Met‐Etch (Selkirk) Ltd at their manufacturing facilities in Scotland as part of a UK Ministry of Defence research contract. The results of this research were included in a report for the UK Defence Research Agency (Electronics Division) and subsequently were also detailed in an individual ‘Guidelines for Designers’ document. This document has since been separately submitted to ECL 19 with a view towards incorporation into the CECC 23000 Approval System. In order to verify the test results, separate comparison measurements were also conducted by other circuit board manufacturers using a range of suitable test instrumentation. There is a growing requirement in the printed circuit board industry for a simple means of testing controlled impedance boards. This paper promotes the use of computer‐controlled test instrumentation so that accurate and repeatable measurements can be made by production staff in a manufacturing environment. If this is achieved, it should be possible to close the quality loop on controlled impedance circuit board production using normal statistical process control techniques.

Abstract

Student support in higher education (HE) is a matter that has received, and is still receiving, rigorous attention in the research environment. HE faces challenges related to the throughput rates nationally and internationally and, as a result of that, most African countries have prioritised support in HE institutions, particularly universities. Amongst the groups of students targeted to receive student support are the marginalised students,1 particularly students with visual impairments (SWVI). Developed countries have tirelessly attempted to ensure that SWVI are supported through aggressive policy positions and technological interventions. This chapter seeks to provide insights on the support programmes for SWVI in HE institutions in Africa. The chapter follows a qualitative approach and uses the social justice theory (Rawls, 1971) as a conceptual lens. Drawing on this theory, it can be argued that the support programmes and services provided to SWVI in Africa limit their participation in HE and constrain effective learning and, ultimately, perpetuate social injustice.

Abstract

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a concept is applicable in public service institutions, where responsibility means that the organization is capable of partaking and carving a solution toward urgent social needs. Universities are institutions in which social responsibility emerges not only because of their fundamental mission in the dissemination of knowledge, training, and creation, but also of the enormous challenges they face being a part of a greater society. A university is created to serve its society by graduating people who can contribute to its social and economic development. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of private universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The academic and professional programs offered by local universities have been developed to follow the revenue-generating practices that are widely used in other different regions of the world. The country has also seen a growing interest in CSR. The chapter investigates the CSR-related evidence as envisaged in UAE and further emphasizes the four levels of responsibilities, namely, academic responsibility, social responsibility, responsibility toward disadvantaged groups, and environmental responsibility, that we can see essential.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report on a program being developed by the Texas A&M University business librarians to employ a street team construct to promote the resources and services of the Texas A&M University's West Campus Business Library and to leverage the importance of “peer relationship” so evident in today's university student.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is a descriptive analysis of the program.

Findings

This unique marketing program seeks to increase the awareness of Texas A&M University business students to the resources and services of the West Campus Business Library. By tapping into the youthful energy of these very students, the program proposes to utilize cutting edge cultural and social trends that are aimed to improve communications with its most important customers.

Practical implications

The program seeks to improve communication with students at an extremely low cost.

Originality/value

Discussion includes the rationale for adopting the guerilla marketing technique of street teams, the program planning process, and a discussion of assessment strategies.

Abstract

This study has examined prospective employees' perceptions regarding a tour guide position, together with a range of entrepreneurialism and work context preference variables. It has been found that this type of position is relatively highly regarded among many respondents, as was self employment and small firm employment as work context preferences. It was also found that effective communication was the most prominent entrepreneurial perspective and was consistently revealed to predict an employment interest in this type of work. The implications of these results as well as suggestions for further exploration of this area are also examined.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore both instruction librarians' attitudes on teaching and how they identify themselves as teachers. Particular attention is to be paid to teaching librarians' views on the effectiveness of two types of instruction models: for‐credit courses and course‐integrated library instruction.

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate librarians' attitudes towards these two models, a survey was constructed targeting librarians who teach information literacy (IL).

Findings

The results indicate that there is an important relationship between the IL instruction model employed and feelings towards campus politics, perceived effectiveness of IL models, and librarians' self‐identification as teachers.

Research limitations/implications

The survey was sent to list‐servs whose readership includes high percentages of teaching librarians and received 276 responses. This is by no means an exhaustive study. The research is intended to be exploratory and to delve more deeply than the past editorials and blog posts on the issue of comparing for‐credit and course‐integrated instruction.

Practical implications

This study can help librarians gain a better understanding of how information literacy models impact librarian perceptions of themselves and their role on campus.

Originality/value

The authors seek to transform a discussion that has occurred mostly informally (in blog posts, on list‐servs, and in conversations) into a formal investigation of librarians' attitudes towards the two models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of the product attribute beliefs of ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee beverages (i.e. content sensory, packaging and branding, and content functional attributes) on perceived value (i.e. utilitarian and hedonic value) and repurchase intention.

Design/methodology/approach

In the study survey, 401 participants who had purchased RTD coffee beverages within the previous month were included. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the survey data.

Findings

The findings indicate that consumers of RTD coffee beverages form utilitarian and hedonic value perceptions through content sensory, packaging and branding, and content functional attribute beliefs. Furthermore, utilitarian value is one of the most crucial determinants of repurchase intentions. The findings further reveal that whereas content functional attribute beliefs have a dominant influence on utilitarian value, content sensory attribute beliefs have a greater influence on hedonic value.

Originality/value

The findings of this study can serve as a reference for RTD coffee beverage companies to develop new products and communication strategies.
